Hydroponics
P.S. 144 now has a NY Sun Works Hydroponics Greenhouse Classroom, generously funded by District 29 Council Member Lynn Schulman. Through this innovative program, students learn about agriculture, plant science, sustainability, and environmental science by growing plants indoors without soil. Students participate in all stages of the growing cycle, from planting seeds to harvesting and tasting! On any given day, you can find plants like cucumbers, tomatoes, chard, lettuce, kale and herbs from around the world growing in the greenhouse classroom. Some recent student-led hydroponics initiatives include the growing and distribution of classroom plants, the donation of extra produce to the Our Lady of Mercy food pantry, and a family harvest event.
